So why is this? Firstly it is of course common sense – people are lazy and generally will take the shortest route to get to their desired goal. In search this will be done by scolling as little as possible and having to read as little as possible, thus clicking the first results that are seen. Of course this is a subjective opinion rather than one driven by evidence. So, where’s the evidence for this top 3 demand? In 2006 AOL leaked data of some 35 million search queries, along with data about click distribution i.e. where search users click (although AOL was a different ‘front-end’ search engine to Google, at the time AOL was powered by Google data). This leak has provided the industry with the largest click distribution study to date allowing claims relating to the importance of the ‘top 3’ to be evidenced. So how does this latest data compare to the 2006 study?..

As shown, the Compete data highlights a significant increase in the number of search users clicking on both the first and second listings in the search results since 2006. In recent years, Google has introduced both universal search e.g. embedded images, videos, news etc, and local search features in the search listings immediately after the first listing in Google. As these features create a void between the first and second results, you’ll be lucky to find search results in 2012 with more than a handful of organic search listings appearing ‘above the fold’. It is therefore likely to be a key reason as to why the first listing in Google has seen such a large increase in clicks. Overall, with such a significant volume of search listings being ‘organic’ in nature and 77% of search users clicking on the top 3 search listings (87% on top 5 listings) this clearly reinforces both the importance of SEO within the marketing mix and the necessity for businesses to invest in high quality SEO services.
Interestingly, paid search listings only accounted for 15% of all listings on any given search results page, yet 55% of search results contained at least 1 advert.
Although it may be easy to overlook the importance of paid search advertising based on the 15% figure, with this small percentage given alongside the 55% figure it highlights the necessity to create highly focused and targeted paid search campaigns to avoid spending money on irrelevent clicks i.e. if listings appear 55% of the tme but only occupy 15% of the page, it highlights that few adverts will be shown on a search result page so any ads that do appear need to stand out.

In addition, the study reveals the click distribution within the key paid advertising areas, highlighting user behaviour. This throws up some interesting results:
Rather unsuprisingly the first paid search listing at the top of a Google search result page takes the lions share of clicks at 59%, only 6% more than the clicks seen for the first organic search result. Rather interestingly however the top result in the right hand side of advertising space is stated to only receive 4% of paid search clicks, with a percentage decline with each subsequent listing. As an agency running paid search campaigns on a regular basis, the 4% stated here falls way out of line with what we expected from our own data.
The data provided here by Compete is of course just one source of information and is presented as extremely top level so I wouldn’t suggest taking it as Gospel. There is no consideration/mention here for personalised search results affecting listings, regional behaviour, rich snippet inclusion (making them more attractive for clicks) and certainly no consideration for both keywords within different verticals and informational/transactional based searches affecting click distribution i.e. transactional search clicks could be scattered widely across the first page of result if rich snippets are showing product prices, whereas information based searches may result in 100% of people clicking the first link – our old ‘friend’, wikipedia! In addition, recent changes by Google have placed stronger emphasis on giving brands prominence in the search results off the back of a brand driven search, with extended sitelinks presented. This would naturally allow for a greater volume of clicks to be placed on the first search result. Also, with Google reducing the number of organic search results from 10 to 7, some of the statistical data and percentages presented here by Compete will already be redundant. The sample size used for this study is also of a fairly decent size at “10s of millions of search engine results pages” so I imagine there will be an upsurge in the number of agencies quoting these new figures when pitching for SEO and Paid Search activity. If however we consider that Google handles around 100 billion search queries per month unfortunately it does make a dataset such as that of Compete’s instantly lack punch. The Compete report is certainly an interesting read and provides further insight for businesses and search marketing professionals alike to better understand search user behaviour. Search Engine Optimization (SEO for short) seems like a mystical, mysterious process to a lot of small business owners. Just the fact that it seems so mysterious has played right into the hands of many companies that sell SEO services at thousands of dollars per month. The sad thing is that many of those companies are the modern-day version of snake oil peddlers who don’t fully understand proper SEO themselves! Even a lot of advertising agencies don’t quite “get it” when it comes to SEO – but they still sell the service to their clients anyway. So what’s a small business owner to do? The answer: do it yourself.
The good news it that SEO isn’t hard to do at all. It’s really quite easy. All it requires is attention to specific details.
The trick to doing your own SEO work is patience and perseverance. It’s not rocket science. It’s doesn’t involve complicated formulas. All it requires is that you do a little planning, pay attention to specific details on your site, and “tweak” those details as needed. In fact, most of it revolves around selecting the right keywords and using them in the right places on your site.
Now before I get started, let me state the obvious…
In order to do your own SEO work, you’ll need to have access to make changes to your website. Ideally your site would be built on a content management system that lets you log in and make changes without needing web design software. However, if your site is not built that way, you can either buy some web design software (like Adobe Dreamweaver for example), or you can assume the role of “project manager” and give your existing web designer specific instructions on what you want changed. Either way would work. Now that we have that out of the way, here are specific things you can do to increase your site’s SEO:
1. Be search engine “friendly”
Start by taking a close look at your website. How is it built? If the bulk of your site content is built in Adobe Flash, or if all the text is actually images, then you need to start from scratch. How can you tell? Well, if all the content on your site (including the text) loads as part of a whole-page animation, then your site is most likely Flash-based. Also, if you place your mouse cursor over the text on your site, hold down the left-click button on your mouse and drag to the side, does it highlight the text or does the text seem to come off the page in a chunk? If it comes off as one chunk, then your site is probably image based. If you still can’t tell after trying these tests, ask the person that built it for you. Why is this important? Search engines use automated software called “spiders” or “robots” to rank websites, and those robots cannot read text that is in Flash files or image files. All the search engine sees is an image. And without being able to read the text on your site, the search engines basically see an empty site, which actually hurts your search engine ranking. In order for search engines to properly index (read) your site, you need to have all the main content as actual HTML text. It’s OK to have images and animations on your site, just don’t make those the primary content. Use them as “window dressing” to enhance your content instead.
2. Plan your use of keywords
Keywords are an area a lot of small business owners get stuck on, or go overboard with. The important thing to do is to plan your use of keywords. Having too many keywords is just as bad as not using the right ones. Also, you want to try and target your keywords by location as much as possible. Let’s look at some specifics on how to do this… First of all, be selective about which keywords you target. Don’t just cram your meta tags and content full of as many keywords as you can think of. That’s called “keyword stuffing” and search engines penalize for that. Instead, do some research and some serious thinking about what keywords are most applicable to what you sell and compare that to what keywords your customers actually search for. For example, if you sell gift baskets in the state of Michigan, instead of using a crazy long string of keywords like “gift, basket, gift basket, baskets, gifts, etc” use something like “holiday gift baskets michigan” as one keyword string then maybe “birthday gift baskets michigan” as another. The point is, if you focus on a few highly target keywords you’ll get better results. Some online tools that will help you choose your keywords are Google’s Keyword Tool, SpyFu, and WordTracker.
3. Be smart with your header tags
When you’re editing the text on your site and you need a big, bold headline in the text, don’t just make the text bold and change the type size. Make use of HTML header tags. These tags are built right into HTML and are usually numbered H1 through H6 with H1 being the largest and sizes getting smaller from there. The reason this is important is because search engines see header tag content as being more important than the rest of the text. So you want to try and work important keywords into your header tags as much as possible, but be smart about it. Using the gift basket example above, you might have a page on your site with information on special gift baskets you do for birthdays. In that case, an appropriate “H1” header for that page would be “Birthday Gift Baskets from Your Company India.” And just like with keywords, don’t go “hog wild” with this using tons of header tags all over your page. Be smart about it, plan it out and work in some targeted keywords for best results.
4. Use image descriptions (alt tags)
As I mentioned earlier, search engines can’t see what’s in an image so it’s important to tell them what the image is using the “alt” tag (also called an image description). Think of a short sentence that describes your image and use that in your alt tag. If your image applies to any of the keywords you’ve chosen, find a way to work those keywords into your sentence. The other reason image descriptions are important is to help folks with a disability be able to navigate your site. There are software programs out there that allow people with blindness or other disabilities to browse the web. These programs achieve this by literally reading the web page to the person. Providing image descriptions help these people by making it easier for them to access the information on your site and know what is there.
5. Use keyword-optimized URLs and Titles
This one is a biggie. Take the keywords you’ve decided on and work them into your website’s page URLs and the page title tags. For example (again using the gift basket example above), if you had a page on your site that was about holiday gif baskets you sold, the actual page address (called a URL) should be something like http://www.yourCompany India.com/holiday-gift-baskets-michigan.html. The important points here is to only use keywords that coincide with the content of the page, never have spaces in the URL (use-hyphens-instead), and keep it down to 3 or 4 keywords. Also, each page of your site has a space for a title – make sure you use it! Insert a page title that accurately reflects the content of the page and uses your keywords where appropriate. Also, put your Company India name AFTER the description in the title. For example, for the holiday gift baskets page above, the title might read something like “Holiday Gift Basket Selections from Your Company India.” The reason to put your Company India name last is it gives priority to the keywords at the front of the title, which search engines like to see.
6. Be smart with your meta tags
Meta tags are those “invisible” fields of content hidden in the code of your website that tell the search engines things like the keywords that relate to your site, the description of your site, whether or not to index a certain page, etc. There’s a lot of debate about the effectiveness of meta tags these days. However, the general consensus is that it’s still a good idea to use them. I especially encourage you to use the description meta tag for each page on your site and write a short, one sentence description of what that page is all about, working in your keywords for that page. Doing this will display that description in search results instead of something random the search engine selects (like the copyright notice), and will make your page appear more relevant to the keywords you used. And remember, keep it short. Google only displays 152 characters (including spaces) as a site description before it cuts off. So if you try to keep your descriptions about the same length as a Twitter post, you’ll be in good shape.
7. Test and monitor
The last thing you need to do is track your progress. This is an area where patience comes into play. The search engines only update their information periodically – in some cases only once every 90 days or so. So you’ll need to be patient while they update their listings, and periodically check to see how your site ranks when you search for one of the keywords you chose. If you’re still not happy with your rank, there are things you can do, but it’s a process of making adjustments, then monitoring the results until you get your site where you want it to be. And don’t forget this is an ongoing process. In other words, you can’t do this once and then forget it. Keep in mind there are other people out there just like you who are trying to get their site to rank higher too. So keep at it to keep your site well ranked.
This will get you started in the right direction
Keep in mind that these tips only deal with optimizing your website and making it more search engine friendly. Your actual rank in the search engines also involves thinks like how many sites link to yours, the quality of those links, how long your web address has been registered (and how long until it expires), and how often you post fresh content to your site to name just a few. Designed for do-it-yourself novice users (or anyone with a need to learn SEO optimization) with little or no HTML experience, this tutorial discuss how to optimize your Web pages without utilizing spamming techniques.
Step 2 – How to Identify Competitor Keywords
It is critical that you identify the best search terms and keywords used on your competitors’ sites (Step 1). To help in this keyword analysis effort we offer tips, advice and tools to research the competition and query history information available through several sources.
Scan the reports and identify the keywords that appear prominent on the page. Write down the top keyword phrases that each site uses, then analyze those back in Step 1 above if they are new to your list.It is worth mentioning that sometimes your competition does something deceptive and hides their keywords. Cloaking is a server technique designed to hide keywords and actually deceive search engines into granting rankings that the sites do not deserve. This server technology submits alternate pages when the search engine looks for the page. These stealth techniques were designed to offer content to the search engine that is exceptionally keyword-loaded in an attempt to bias the spider into giving the page a higher ranking position. Some people submit pages that present the spiders with content that differs from what browsers will see. We strongly discourage the use of this type of technique — that is spam.SEO Tip: You should also search for your domain name in the major search engines. While this is not obvious, it is very informative. Search both Google and Yahoo! using the following search format: “.seoforindia.com” -site:seoforindia.com. Replace seoforindia.com in the search query with your domain name.It is important that you do NOT take the HTML source (and thus content) from a competitor’s page. Not only is it a copyright violation, but it will result in duplicate content and will cause SEO optimization difficulties. All that you really need are sample keywords used for search engine ranking. Using brainstorming techniques you should re-combine the words to make a complete list. Be sure that you do not target trademarked words since that could lead to legal action against you. Copyrights on a site protect contiguous character strings and include displayed and hidden text (including keyword strings), so you cannot take a large portion of a site’s content and use it to compete against the site. Even if there is not a copyright, the content is considered intellectual property, and there may be a severe negative effect from taking it.The use of trademarked or registered names is illegal without appropriate notations and statements in the page. If you intend to use a word or phrase that legally belongs to a competitor, you must follow accepted fair use publication and legal credit guidelines. This applies to all of your internet marketing projects, so please beware.
|It is far more important to rank well with many search criteria than to be number one with only one criterion!|
As an additional note, use different keyword patterns and titles for ALL of the major pages in your site, and submit each individual URL to get all of the different keywords and titles added to the search engine. The goal of search engine optimization is to be found for many keyword searches, so have each page cater to different keywords!
Search Engine Optimization/MPI
It may be helpful to view the Title, Meta Description, Meta Keywords, Headings for many pages and compare them in one pass rather than loading each individual page separately. The Multi-page Info Tool (MPI) will give you this information and whether or not the page has a rel=”canonical” tag on it and lets you compare these at once. To use the tool, simply enter up to 6 URLs and click Get Data.
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 Until You Have Finished Your Keyword Searches
Be sure to mix up the sequence of the keywords if (and only if) appropriate and they still make sense, for example: “word1 word2 word3” then “word3 word1 word2” then “word2 word3 word1,” etc. Keep searching until you are satisfied that you have most of the keywords relevant to your site. Simply put, you can never have sufficient search engine ranking. If you think you do, simply add some more keywords appropriate to your site.
Step 3 – How to Combine the Keywords
Up until now you have been brainstorming — trying to determine what keyword phrases people are using in the search engines that will help them find your site in the results pages. You should have a lengthy list of keywords and phrases at this point, and you should be ready to test them. Regardless of your list please consider that searchers do not necessarily think like you do, and so you get many “long tail keyword queries” that are in addition to those in your SEO project. Properly done, you will qualify for these words as well. Sort the keywords and phrases in descending order of their perceived importance (i.e., how likely it is that they will be used by visitors as search words and hence, generate traffic). As a sidebar, traffic that seldom converts may not be of value, and you might not want to focus on those words unless branding is important. If uncertain, leave them in the order used by the highest ranking competitor pages. Be sure to identify two-word or three-word (and sometimes longer) phrases, if used. It is also important that you add words to help clarify the use of your keywords. For instance, “capital” can have very different meanings — such as intellectual capital, state capital, capital letters, venture capital, etc. So a keyword or two that helps the index builders learn the context of your keywords will help raise your search engine rankings. SEO Tip: Each keyword in your Meta tags must also appear within your content to avoid spamming penalties. Also, consider common misspellings [sic] as additions to your keyword lists Search Engine Optimization and Ranking Advice: Excessive use of keywords in your site content (known as keyword stuffing) is going to cause a search engine to ignore or decrease the value of that keyword within your page, and perhaps identify the page as spam. Also, using multiple keywords with the same root, like “word, words, wording, worded” (called stemming), will generally not cause a problem if the text reads naturally. Things are definitely getting tough though, and it is advised that you use extreme caution when creating your Meta tags. If you are indexed by any engine, and remain indexed for a week, then you have probably passed their test. Run our Page Analyzer tool (Step 2) on your own pages before submitting them to the search engines. The guidelines below are accurate and will help a lot.
For best results, the following Web publishing techniques should be avoided:
- Overuse or stuffing of keywords
- Use of keywords that do not relate to the content of the site
- Use of fast meta refresh
- Use of colored text on same-color background
- Duplication of pages with different URLs
- Use of different pages that bridge to the same URL
It is also important to discard potential keywords that are not likely to be used in a search, especially if they do not contribute to your content. Properly done, you might end up with as few as 10 or as many as 100 major keywords. If you add all of the words, it will dilute the importance of each keyword, so select well. In general, you will have a hard time keeping the keyword analysis list short if you include plurals and various combinations of words to maximize your frequency counts. This site has many keywords in various forms and combinations, but we felt each word was important when we designed our keywords. The last keyword should be your site identification taken from your URL (ours is seoforindia.com), for SEO ranking and placement reasons discussed later. Be sure that this string appears as content to avoid spamming (can be in a URL string or mailto at the bottom of your page). As for spamming technologies, there is evidence that the major search engines look across pages within their index for long-string repeats, essentially a plagiarism test, so mix up your keywords in the ALT attributes of your image tags to be sure they are not identical in sequence to words used elsewhere (text or Meta tags). Duplicate content is a very bad thing, and it can cause site-wide penalties. SEO Tip: Be very careful not to replicate content on or from other pages or even sites, and if that replication happens (as with affiliate sites) you have a serious problem. Duplicate content is a real management problem when doing SEO optimization. Also, repeating your keywords in the content, as long as it is within a reasonable sentence construct and has appropriate context, will not be considered spamming. A search engine usually cares about spamming outside of the normal sentence form when reviewing content, rather than sentence spamming issues. Using “hidden” text techniques will usually get you penalized as a spammer, so avoid doing that as part of your search engine optimization efforts.
Step 4 – How to Add Your Keywords to the Content
) and especially embed them into your displayed content. Try to use as many keywords as you can in a natural and grammatically correct way in your opening sentences, since this sets the topic for the page and contributes to the theme of the site.
Keyword tuning for a search engine marketing campaign is an iterative loop; you keep doing it until you rank reasonably well on several search engines. At that point you at least have the right words and a reasonable Meta Keywords tag. But some search engines use different strings to determine keywords, and their algorithms downplay or ignore Meta tags. These search engines extract keywords from the content on your page, so you need to place your best search words throughout the displayed content for your page.
Step 5 – How to Submit to Search Engines
Once the same words are in your Title, Meta Description and Meta Keywords tags, and also in other text (Headings and ALT attributes) and displayed content, and you are satisfied with your results, then, and only then, is it appropriate to submit your URLs to each major search engine. For search engine submission to just the top few search engines, you may use our URL ADD page with links to the add pages of the major search engines. Allow two days to four weeks for each search engine submission to be indexed in each major search engine. If you do not show up (as is common), then resubmit. If you continue to miss the search engine ranking results you desire, then go back and review your keyword usage, either increasing or decreasing the keyword frequency until you have the desired results. Step 6 – Consider Community, Intent, and Engagement Objects™
There have recently been several important developments in the search engine optimization world that will significantly impact your SEO optimization efforts. The major issues are a result of changing technology in the area of behavior-based search, intent-based search and blended search (like Google Universal). These technologies collectively impact search engine marketing and SEO in significant ways. Behavior-based Search — This is the tailoring of search results based upon the behavior of the searcher. If I search for “java,” the search results are tailored based upon my search history for either programming, beverages or travel. And if I am into travel, the search results are biased by my interest in certain types of travel activities (such as scuba, fishing or sailing). This means that a given number of people searching for the same information will likely see different rankings or results pages. This mandates that the SEO keyword selection process consider the behavior and the community of the searcher in the overall keyword selection process. To accommodate behavior-based searching, SEOs should use keywords on the site that are common to their target audience. Intent-based Search — This is the determination of the searcher’s intent, categorized as commerce (shopping) or research. Certain SEO project phrases are obviously for research, and the sites do not need to be physically local to the searcher. In such cases, the most relevant sites can be located anywhere. But if the intent is shopping, or appears to be urgent, then local results are presented. Even without a Google sign-in, results are often targeted based upon the IP location of the searcher, and local results are given precedence. As such, sometimes a searcher from New York will see different results than a searcher in Los Angeles for the same query. In this case the SEO should use keywords on the site that are local to their target audience. Blended Search — This is where Engagement Objects impact search. There are many items that can be added to a Web site. One job of the search engine optimization and Web design team is to mingle video, MP3 sound files, images, maps, blogs, news and books within the Web site. The search engines want to improve the engagement of the searcher with the resulting sites, and enhanced interaction requires the inclusion of what we have coined as Engagement Objects™. We believe that without these objects in exactly the right formats, your site will not rank as high as your competitors who engage their visitors. Those more engaging sites are expected to rank higher in the search results. The code can be downloaded from the Engagement Objects™ section and installed onto your site without technical confusion. The download (coming soon) contains all you need to make it work for you. Once you identify opportunities to add Engagement Objects to your site, be sure to use SEO optimization selected keywords just as you would in any other content. It will contribute to content structure and theme, and it will certainly aid engagement. Adding Engagement Objects is a part of the SEO process and should be done.
Step 7 – How to Check Your Search Engine Ranking
It may take a few weeks for accepted search engine submissions to actually become effective with the major search engines. In some cases, it may take several submissions before you get registered. Considering that the Web is growing at an exceptional rate, it is a wonder that any search engine can keep up at all. Keep trying to get indexed. Visit the search engine that you care about most and see if you are registered by searching for your URL. SEO Tip: If you have our SEMToolBar, it will report the date your site was last spidered (cached date) on your results page. Your ratings will improve with time under our SEO optimization methodology. There is a very specialized high-tech market for search engine marketing tools that convert raw data into SEO intellectual capital that you can actually use. There is a clear difference between data and wisdom, and that SEO wisdom is learned. Education is key. It is hard to have a great product, and those that do must charge for their tools in order to pay for the effort. The power of search engine optimization tools justifies the fee, so we recommend that you visit our SEOToolSet®. Our SEO tools (there are many) are straightforward, and the reports are easy to understand. If you like the free search engine advice in the visitor versions (under “Free Tools”), there is a much more powerful set of SEO tools available on a subscription basis. These tools are very fast and powerful, and they are recommended. But then, we are biased. Once you have your SEO ranking results, you can easily identify where you need to go back and resubmit your site and fine-tune your keywords. Hopefully you will be placed at or near the top of your search results page. MANY people are concerned about their Google rankings, and cannot seem to see any significant change in rankings when they change things (optimize pages) in significant ways. We believe that the changes do matter and are causing ranking changes, but users simply cannot see them. In most cases, if you do a query for a keyword, Google will calculate the sequence of pages in the results list based upon the algorithm and then filter the results so that not more than two pages are shown from the same site. In other words, if a site ranks for all of your keywords in the top ten results, two will show and eight will be suppressed. So if you are shown in the Google results as number three, are you really number three or are you really number eleven? Google will also resequence results to present two pages that would appear on the same results page in sequence (an indented result) even if they are not naturally in sequence. Sites with a page in position one and another in position ten will find Google resequencing the results to be number one with an indented number two, where that number two result is actually in position ten. This means that the real number two page will be in position three. In some cases the keywords are highly competitive, and the top positions are commonly held by different domains. In such cases the listed pages seldom see duplications. In other cases there are dominant sites. Do a query for the keyword “cisco” and see how many pages are from the same site!
Step 8 – How To Do Link Building
Link tracking allows you to identify and choose possible sites that you will want as link partners once your site is content-rich and optimized. If these sites link to your competition, then you want them to also link to you. This is also done so that these potential link partners can be checked for Meta keywords that might be related to your site and that were missed by your competition. Who links to your competition may be a great indicator of the community that contributes to the ranking for your visitors as well. Add these URLs to the URL list from Step 1 that is used in Step 2. You might also try putting the http:// address in quotes and using Google. SEO Tip: The number and authority of links to your site are factors in determining how well your site will rank with some search engines. Popularity is often measured by gauging PageRank associated with a particular keyword phrase, and impacts the ranking your site might have. You will want to begin to develop links as soon as possible, but we recommend that you add Engagement Objects and keywords before aggressively going after links from others. On the subject of link popularity — we consider links vital to long-term natural search engine optimization and ranking. The objective is this: if you get a site to link to you, then you gain PageRank popularity points. If that site has a lot of quality sites linking to it and it links to you, you get a lot more points, but if that site has few quality sites linking to it, you get only a few points. As such, for SEO ranking purposes a link from a major site in your industry with a high PageRank would be worth more than a link from Bobspage.com, provided that both had content similar to yours. In essence, if enough quality sites link to you, then your site becomes a quality site by association. So you want the best sites, not the most, to link to you. Likewise, if you link to other quality sites, then your site is assumed to be a quality site by association. However, the sites must be covering the same topics as your linking page in both directions. All other links are of minimal importance (or in the case of spam, they may be ignored or even penalized). And do not bother to buy hundreds of URLs and cross-link them or buy into an advertising network. The search engines can identify them and filter them out faster than you can perform submission on these pages. At best, they are short-lived and rarely have a long-term SEO benefit. SEO Tip: you do not want to join a link farm or use spam in any way. You do not want to purchase “junk ads” that look like links but are not worth very much. What you want are links from quality sites where their content is supplemental and synergistic to your own. The links should be within the main body of their page, and contain YOUR SEO selected keywords in the anchor text (within the link where visitors click). SEO Code of Ethics
The discussion of any SEO Code of Ethics is like a discussion on politics or religion: there are more than two sides, all sides are strongly opinionated, and seldom do they choose the same path to the same end. Most Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practitioners understand these ethics, yet not all practitioners practice safe-SEO. Too many SEO practitioners claim a bias towards surfers, or the search engines, or their clients (all are appropriate in the correct balance), and it is common for the “whatever it takes” excuse to bend some of these ethics to fit their needs. This page does not pass judgment, it simply states the obvious.
SEO Code of Ethics Language Translations
Whereas all parties are working towards presenting relevant and high quality information in an easy to use format to information seekers, and whereas SEO practitioners are being contracted to assist clients in obtaining higher rankings for client pages, we (and those linking to this page) are voluntarily adhering to the below SEO Code of Ethics: No SEO practitioner will intentionally do harm to a client. This involves the continued use of any technology or procedure (without appropriate care) that is known to result in having the client site removed from search engine indexes or directories, or rendered inoperative. Questionable adherence to standards must be addressed via the Robots Exclusion Standard. No SEO practitioner will intentionally violate any specifically published and enforced rules of search engines or directories. Should rules and guidelines change (as they often do), the SEO practitioner will promptly take action to comply with the changes as they apply to all clients. Where rules and guidelines are unclear, the SEO practitioner will seek clarification and await approval from the appropriate search engine before continuing to utilize potentially harmful technology or procedures. No SEO practitioner will intentionally mislead, harm, or offend a consumer. All individuals utilizing a search engine to visit a site will not be misled by the information presented to or by the search engine, or harmed or offended upon arrival at the client site. This includes techniques like “bait and switch” where the client page does not substantially contain and is not clearly associated with the optimized phrase, or may be reasonably offensive to targeted visitors. No SEO practitioner will intentionally violate any laws. This involves the deliberate and continued violation of copyright, trademark, servicemark, or laws related to spamming as they may exist at the state, federal, or international level. No SEO practitioner will falsely represent the content of the client site. This includes the practice of presenting different versions of web pages to different users except where that information is altered solely to meet browser specifications and needs, sensitivity to regional factors such as language, or product specific needs. In general, ALL requests for a specific URL should be served identical HTML by the web server. No SEO practitioner will falsely represent others work as their own. This includes the taking of work from others in whole or in part and representing this work as their own. The SEO practitioner may not make verbatim copies of the work of others (instead of authoring original work) without the prior consent of the other party. No SEO practitioner will misrepresent their own abilities, education, training, standards of performance, certifications, trade group affiliations, technical inventory, or experiences to others. This includes quantifiable statements related to project timetables, performance history, Company India resources (staff, equipment, and proprietary products), and client lists. Guarantees will be restricted to items over which the SEO practitioner has significant and reasonable control. No SEO practitioner will participate in a conflict of interest without prior notice to all parties involved. This includes the practice of choosing to emphasize one client over another in competing keywords because there is more personal gain for the practitioner. All clients are treated equally and all will receive equal best effort in their Search Engine Optimization. No SEO practitioner will set unreasonable client expectations. This includes the practice of accepting more than a reasonable number of clients competing for the same keywords and implying that all will be in the top positions in the search engines. This also includes the implication that results can be obtained in an unreasonable amount of time given the known condition of the search engines, client site, and competition. All SEO practitioners will offer their clients both internal and external dispute resolution procedures. This includes the publishing of address and phone numbers on primary web pages, the inclusion of third-party dispute resolution links prominently placed within the practitioners web site, and contracts that include sections discussing dispute resolution. All SEO practitioners will protect the confidentiality and anonymity of their clients with regards to privileged information and items implying testimonial support for the SEO practitioner. All staff of SEO practitioner shall be bound to protect information that is not generally known as it may harm the client. The SEO practitioner will not include the publishing of testimonials and proprietary logos of client lists, press releases, and other collateral discussing the client without explicit approvals. All SEO practitioners will work to their best ability to increase or retain the rankings of client sites. Clients are contracting for fee with the SEO practitioner in order to obtain and retain search engine placement. The SEO practitioner is charged with an obligation to utilize appropriate and allowed technology and methodologies to improve and retain the rankings for their clients in the face of shifting search engine technology, competition, and client web site needs.

Search Engine Optimization Standards and Spam Discussion
Site ‘A’ is well written, content-rich, and exceptionally relevant for search keyword ‘W’. Site ‘B’ is not as well written, not as content-rich, and is considered not as relevant. Site ‘B’ implements Search Engine Optimization (SEO) technology and a few borderline spam tricks and suddenly site ‘B’ outranks site ‘A’ for search ‘W’. What this does is to lower the surfer satisfaction with the relevancy of the results from that search engine, certainly hurts the “user experience”, and slaps the face of those working at the search engine Company India responsible for seeing that surfers actually see relevant content and are happy. Is it any wonder that the search engines are tightening down on the “spam” rules? It is one matter to improve the quality, presentation, and general use of keyword phrases on a web page, and an entirely different matter to trick the engines into higher rankings without editing the site content. It is clearly the position of the search engines that the role of the SEO practitioner is to improve the quality, quantity, clarity, and value of readily accessed content so that the search engines can select worthy sites based upon their proprietary relevancy factors. The SEO practitioner should help the search engines by making the sites more relevant and making relevant information clear and easy to access, and not by using spam techniques to artificially inflate the perceived relevancy of inferior sites. Don’t disguise an inferior site – fix it. Don’t make site ‘B’ appear to be more relevant than site ‘A’, actually make it more relevant. While some search engines allow and reward off-page SEO technologies, such action is going to be short lived and of diminishing and exceptionally marginal benefit. Pages that are informative and contribute to the content, usability, and even the spiderability of any site will be increasingly rewarded and are the future of SEO. For too long many SEO practitioners were involved in an “arms race”, inventing more and more devious technology to trick the search engines and beat our competitors. With the aggressive anti-spam programs now emerging, the news is out — if you want to get search engine rankings for your clients you have to play well within the rules. And those rules are absolutely “no tricks allowed”. Simply put, work on honest relevancy and win. All others will fade away.
NOTE: It was not always that way. In 2000 the “doorway page” was commonly used as a portal to dynamic content since the search engines were quite poor at locating and spidering that content. In fact, several major engines endorsed them, and some still allow them. Back in 2001 I even researched the impact of automated doorway generation software on my own site. Although there were some embarrassing errors in my code, the research proved that doorway pages could not outperform the same amount of effort in optimizing real site pages. In early 2002 the search engines did a reversal in their opinions of doorway pages, having improved their dynamic page spidering and indexing capabilities, and started enforcing the stance that doorway pages were spam. Several had previously made statements that doorway pages were spam, but now they were starting to enforce it. Today they are considered pure spam by most people. This shows you that what works today may not work tomorrow, and that if you play with fire you will regret it. [As a note, my “doorway” experiments of many years ago have continued to haunt me to this day even though everything I have done in the last 2 years is totally compliant with the rules as written by the major search engines. My advice is to always play in the center of the acceptable area and do not experiment with new ways to fool the engines and earn overnight rankings. In my case it really was research, but nobody cares.]
It is known that there are differing technologies and methodologies used by SEO practitioners. It is not the intent of a Code of Ethics to define HOW the code is met, but rather to objectively set the bounds of compliance. For instance, from an Ethics standpoint, it does not matter if you use Cloaking, Doorway, Hallway, Site Maps, or Shadow pages to optimize your site as long as the product meets the Code of Ethics. However, search engine acceptance will depend upon meeting these Codes plus SEO Standards appropriate (and today, unique) to each search engine. In general, if actions are in compliance with the Code of Ethics and are accepted by the search engines (thus obviously meeting their individual SEO Standards) then they are allowed. But understand that things are changing, and that what is a trick allowed today will be blacklisted tomorrow. It is better to focus on “honest page” Search Engine Optimization than waste your time on something that will need to be abandoned soon. These are general guidelines that may vary from search engine to search engine:
- Keywords should be relevant, applicable, and clearly associated with page body content.
- Keywords should be used as allowed and accepted by the search engines (placement, color, etc.)
- Keywords should not be utilized too many times on a page (frequency, density, distribution, etc.)
- Redirection technology (if used) should facilitate and improve the user experience. But understand that this is almost always considered a trick and is frequently a cause for removal from an index.
- Redirection technology (if used) should always display a page where the body content contains the appropriate keywords (no bait and switch).
- Redirection technology (if used) may not alter the URL (redirect), affect the browser BACK button (cause a loop), or display page information that is not the property of the site owner or allowed by agreement without sound technical justification (ie, language redirects).
- Pages should not be submitted to the search engines too frequently.
NOTE: To be fair, each search engine must support at least the Robots Exclusion Standard. This is not always the case, but it should be. Additional guidelines for a search engine or directory may further discuss “relevance”, “spamming”, “cloaking” or “redirection”, usually as it relates to “user experience”. In general, revising or adding content is good if it improves the user experience. This is the subjective area we must all interpret, and why rules change so often. Please refer to the individual search engine submission page for specific rules and guidelines.
There are three main players when it comes to Search Engine Optimization:
- Clients – owners of the web site: Emphasis is on sales, holding users (sticky), and User Experience, with an emphasis on getting the visitor to take a desired action.
- Search Engines: Emphasis is on providing a positive User Experience in great part through relevance (controlled by algorithms) and minimal negative impact as a result of “bait-and-switch” technologies.
- SEO Firms: Obtain traffic for Client sites as a result of a search engine query. This involves understanding the SE ranking algorithm, beating the competing SEO firms optimizing other Clients for the same terms, and remaining within the “No Spam” boundaries (play just within the rules). SEO practitioners are paid by Clients (not Search Engines) and are rewarded for rankings at almost (until there is a risk) any price.
Unfortunately, if the rules change, sites may be dropped from SE’s. If Algorithms change, sites may be lowered in the rankings. If competing SEO firms are successful in finding a new trick just within the rules, site rankings may fall. If new competing client sites enter the market, site rankings may drop. If the Client site uploads altered pages or changes server technology, site rankings may drop. Processes
There are four main page-centric SEO processes used by search engine optimization firms:
- Edit Client site pages: the revisions made to a client site’s pages so that they may rank higher in the search engine. This is “honest” SEO work and involves editing real “honest” web site pages. This is the “bread-and-butter” of legitimate SEO firms and is the clear winner when it comes to obtaining meaningful and long-lasting rankings.
- Man Made Pages: commonly a “doorway-like” technology (Shadow Page) that is keyword intensive and that if visited should present an “honest” site page. This is a labor intensive process where a copy of a real “honest” page is made, then that copy is altered to emphasize keywords found on the “honest” page (page presented). In some implementations, this page loads the page to be presented into a frameset, and some redirect. This is not to be confused with “web design” where additional content is added to the site and that is intended for human visitors. ANY man made page that is not intended for human visitors, no matter how great the content, is considered spam by all of the major search engines.
- Machine Made Pages: commonly an “doorway-like” page where the content of the page is derived from other site content based upon keywords and compiled by a software tool. Some implementations generate pages using jibberish or templates that are easily detected by the search engines. This type of tool could literally generate thousands of additional pages in minutes. ANY machine generated page that is not intended for human visitors, no matter how great the content, is considered spam by all of the major search engines.
- Cloaking: this is normally associated with sites doing IP and USER-AGENT serving where the internet server will present a page that will vary based upon the visitor characteristics. This technology is commonly used to present differing content to each search engine or browser, thus a search engine seldom sees the same content that is presented to a browser. ANY cloaked site that filters based upon whether the visitor is a spider or a human, no matter how great the content, is considered spam by all of the major search engines.
The primary methods used to improve search engine ranking are discussed on our site. This section lists a couple of areas that are affected by emerging standards, and thus are called-out for special notice.
- Navigation: the use of links to encourage spiders to locate content within the web site, and to support “popularity” algorithms.
- Content: the inclusion or focus on words, phrases, and themes associated with search engine query strings.
- Transfers: pages that display (or transfer) to a real “honest” page. These pages commonly are keyword-rich and theme-based for search engines, yet provide a reformatted page for the browser (very much like a standard Frames implementation in conjunction with a search engine optimized no-frames area). This includes URL-switching where the displayed page has a browser address that is different from the URL in the search engine link (thus is a redirection), or where the browser back button causes a “loop”.
Bad Practice Issues
It is clear that there are many different opinions about what constitutes a bad organic (natural) search engine optimization practice: “spam” and “cloaking” seem to be the leaders. I present these items as generally accepted BAD practices and encourage others to submit ideas for this list as well. Some of these SEO practices were once accepted by the search engines, but have become “bad” over time as the search engines have evolved to combat their individual notions of “spam”. Transparent, hidden, misleading, and inconspicuous links — the use of any fully transparent image for a link, the use of hidden links (possibly in DIV/LAYERs), any link associated with a graphic without words / symbols that can be interpreted as even remotely representing the effect of taking the link, or inconspicuous links like 1×1 pixel graphics or the use of links on punctuation (<a href=link> </a><a href=real-link>real words</a><a href=link>.</a>) would be “spam” and a cause for removal from a search engine index. “Machine generated” pages – Unconditionally spam. There are products on the market that make such pages unnecessary in any case. Cloaking – this is a very deceptive process in all circumstances unless there is no impact (deletion, formatting, or insertion) on content delivered to the visitor different than to the search engine spiders. Where the stated objective of the tool [filtering by IP number or User Agent] is to facilitate the delivery of differing content based upon visitor/search engine identification processes the implementation of cloaking technology is considered BAD. Although not all engines can detect cloaked sites, and some may choose to allow it, cloaked sites are considered spam in most cases. Google has stated that they have a tool that can detect such pages and is removing cloaked sites from their index where deception is involved. Spam is an even broader topic and runs from white-on-white to overloading the web with “free web pages/sites developed to provide volumes of links to a site to boost popularity”. I think that this category needs significant definition, but it is the most easily defined in “black and white” rules. A new area of spam involves “external” factors such as sites with numerous, unnecessary host names, excessive cross-linking of sites to artificially inflate perceived popularity, and the inclusion of obligated links as part of an affiliate program.
What the engines think is spam
“Our anti-spamming techniques are designed to find sites or subnets that submit large numbers of pages with essentially the same content, or that lead to the same content. A Web site that attempts to manipulate search results may be blocked from the AltaVista index. We are constantly working to maintain the highest quality index on the Web. Attempts to fill AltaVista’s index with misleading or promotional pages lower the value of the index and make the search experience frustrating and inefficient. A poor search experience hurts everyone, large and small businesses and nonprofits as well as searchers. Here are some specific examples of manipulation that may cause us to block a site from our index:
- Pages with text that is not easily read, either because it is too small or is obscured by the background of the page,
- Pages with off-topic or excessive keywords,
- Duplication of content, either by excessive submission of the same page, submitting the same pages from multiple domains, or submitting the same content from multiple hosts,
- Machine-generated pages with minimal or no content, whose sole purpose is to get a user to click to another page,
- Pages that contain only links to other pages,
- Pages whose primary intent is to redirect users to another page.
